Studio Film Bulusari

Cantic Films has spearheaded the social initiative known as Studio Film Bulusari, aimed at bridging the gap between cinema and the local community while fostering its growth and preserving its rural identity. Serving as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and storytelling, Studio Film Bulusari enables the community to showcase its rich heritage and share invaluable experiences with a global audience.

This project was documented during its construction as part of the Sumito project, actively involving the community in its development process. It resulted in the creation of a public and free space serving both the local community and neighboring towns as a communal meeting place. The cinema is located in Bulusari Village, Bayuwangi, East Java.

The cinema hosts a diverse screening program aimed at cultivating a habit of cinema-going within the community, while simultaneously facilitating a journey of self-discovery and global exploration through the masterworks of classic and contemporary Indonesian filmmakers such as Usmar Ismail or Garin Nugroho, alongside international cinematic gems. Equally significant are the documentary screenings, which play a pivotal role in enhancing community awareness and understanding, by shedding light on crucial narratives and social perspectives. For instance, films like “Pesantren” by Shalahuddin Siregar serve as powerful tools to encourage reflection and provoke dialogue on important societal issues.

In acknowledgment of cinema’s profound ability to capture and preserve the essence of a community and its cultural heritage, Studio Film Bulusari endeavors to further its impact through the introduction of complimentary free courses and artistic workshops. These initiatives harness the power of cinema as a medium to not only inspire and motivate the youth within the community, many of whom face educational challenges, but also to impart valuable forms of self-expression. Above all, our goal is to empower individuals to become active participants and custodians of their rural society, fostering a deeper appreciation for their traditions and the imperative of their preservation, particularly through the creation of community-driven documentary programs.
